Job Description

The qualified candidate will be required to develop, test, and deploy technical solutions for endpoint hardware and software across the enterprise while ensuring compatibility with existing solutions. This position has a strong focus on Windows client solutions as well as Linux client solutions and operating system security. The candidate will provide high level technical solutions, custom packages, scripts, security baselines, and other creative client based solutions. They will help architect and continually expand our software deployment, vulnerability patching, and vulnerability tracking capabilities for endpoint devices. Cross-train Vulnerability Remediation Technicians when needed on proper patching process and continue to aid support staff as needed. Work with staff to evaluate and approve new client hardware and software that meets the requirements of the laboratory for usability, security, and energy efficiency. Work independently and in a team environment.

Job Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop a Linux client baseline and centralized management solution. Secure the OS based on a known security baseline such as CIS or DISA STIGs.

  • Expand our software deployment, patching, and vulnerability management capabilities to handle Linux systems through new or existing systems.

  • Assist the Windows client engineers on existing and new project.

  • Suggest, test, and deploy new products or methods for software deployment and patching.

  • Cross train support staff and Vulnerability Remediation Staff in current and new methods for monitoring, and remediating vulnerabilities on endpoints.

  • Help maintain an unapproved software list across all operating systems. Use existing tools such as Ivanti and AppLocker to ensure tracking and removal of existing software. Suggest new tools and processes to assist in this process.

  • Create, test, package, and deploy software and scripts across Windows and Linux environments.

  • Provide enterprise level hardware evaluations to determine standards for client computing.

  • Provide Tier 3 support to end user and support staff. Answer questions and solve problems related to hardware and software. Remotely administer client systems to apply configurations and assist users.

  • Help with the creation of Software and Hardware standards to be used across the enterprise.

  • Assist with ITS and Enterprise projects as requested. Collaborate with other teams as needed to ensure successful completion of projects.

  • Develop documentation and training for support staff regarding standard software, hardware, and procedures.

  • Ability to obtain a HSPD-12 credential as directed by Homeland Presidential Directive 12, which includes a favorable Tier 2 level background investigation conducted by the U.S. Government and an FBI fingerprint check.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Expert knowledge of client operating systems including Microsoft Windows 10, Windows 11, and a Debian based Linux variety, preferably Ubuntu.

  • Experience deploying and managing Microsoft 365 client products such as Office and Teams.

  • Experience using Vulnerability Scanning software such as Nexpose or Nessus to detect, monitor and help verify vulnerability remediations.

  • Knowledge of Software deployment, scheduling, and patching methods.

  • Software Packaging knowledge for Windows and Linux.

  • OS Scripting for Windows and Linux.

  • Strong experience with Centralized client management tools to ensure proper hardware and software inventories, security compliance, software deployment and remote assistance.

  • Experience using security baselines such as CIS or DISA STIGs to harden an operating system, along with product best practices for configuration and deployment.

  • Familiarity with ITIL Fundamental principles.

  • Ability to manage time and projects in a primarily remote setting, creating and achieving deadlines, maintaining communication with other remote staff.

  • Ability to return to the South Table Mesa (RSF) campus when required for hands on projects, cross-training and troubleshooting.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD or equivalent relevant education/experience. Complete understanding and wide application of principles, concepts and techniques in specific field. General knowledge of related IS disciplines. Strong leadership and project management skills. Skilled in analytical techniques, practices and problem solving. Advanced programming, design and analysis abilities with various computer software programs and information systems.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: IT Professional IV / Annual Salary Range: $95,500 - $171,900

Job Profile: IT Professional III / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 - $143,300

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
