Job Title: Controls & Electrical Maintenance Engineer

JOB PURPOSE

The ice cream processing team at Colworth has an exciting vacancy for a Controls & Electrical Maintenance Engineer based at their Advanced Prototyping Engineering Centre. This role involves building control panels and electrical wiring to working specifications and ensuring critical electrical maintenance on ice cream processing equipment. This is an ideal opportunity for someone recently graduated or at entry level with a working knowledge of electronics control, instrumentation, and maintenance.

Ice cream is a large and highly successful business in Unilever and has now been set up as a standalone Business Unit. Ice cream is also one of the most complex products to make because of the wide array of product formats and mixing, forming, filling, shaping & freezing technologies involved. The ice cream process development team is responsible for identifying, creating, and delivering innovative and reliable new processes to support the design and manufacture of ice cream products across our world-renowned brands (e.g. Magnum, CdO, Cornetto, Walls, B&J, GROM, Cremissimo, Ingman, Evga, Cucciolone) to meet consumers’ needs.

The Controls & Electrical Maintenance Engineer will work within an established team of experts within the ice cream process development team that provide process engineering & automation solutions to support new product innovations, plus improvements to value, waste reduction, sustainability, and quality.

Main tasks include but are not limited to; repair, design, plan, build and wire, program, commission and modify electrical panels and control systems to be used in the construction of test rigs, prototype machines and pilot plant equipment. Generally, equipment is built for use at Colworth but on occasion can be shipped to other Unilever factories across the world. In addition, Controls & Electrical Maintenance Engineer will be the made point of contact for all electrical preventative and reactive maintenance for pilot plant equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Be the main point of contact for all electrical maintenance of ice cream processing equipment.

  • Repair and fault find electrical and control systems.

  • Interact with suppliers and external contractors to purchase components for electrical wiring, control, instrumentation, and pneumatic equipment.

  • Observe all electrical safety rules and codes of practice in accordance with Unilever Regulations and relevant safety legislation e.g., PUWER and CE marking.

  • Build control panels and complete electrical wiring according to working specifications and customer requirements.

  • Communicate with customers when machines have been built or problems have been rectified.

  • Act as custodian of processing equipment, ensuring safety documentation is up to date and trained out to users.

  • Ensure safety and operability of new equipment and reviews electrical safety of existing equipment via electrical checks.

  • Maintain machine safety documentation, maintenance records, training records and support machine and task risk assessment as required.

  • After suitable training, operate machining tools and equipment as required.

  • Help regularly audit, verify, or validate safe systems of work.

  • Follow up safety actions and ensure compliance.

  • Support good housekeeping of electrical store and process areas.

Key Skills

  • Knowledge of all safety rules and codes of practice in accordance with UK Regulations and other relevant safety legislation eg. EU

  • Produce component units and full assemblies using good fitting and wiring practices.

Relevant Experience

  • Engineering Degree in Electronics, Control and Instrumentation or Electrical/Controls apprenticeship

  • Electrical inspection, testing and fault finding.

  • Experience of designing, designing build of process control systems

  • Experience in electric, pneumatic and/or mechanical engineering

  • Experience working with Siemens (TIA Portal, LogoSoft), Rockwell (Studio 5000)
