Describe Your Team: The Analytical Data Services (ADS) is part of Global Data Science (GDS), expands the capabilities and expertise to tackle even more challenges and further advance the data science & analytical solutions and impact that we bring to businesses across the company. The Instrumentation Solutions is a high impact, cross-functional team that will have the ability to influence everything from what analytics gets crafted, to how tracking is instrumented, all the way until enabling the actual analytics to happen.

Describe the Opportunity:

The Instrumentation Solution team seeks a top-performing, highly-motivated analytics expert to join a center of excellence at PayPal that is at the heart of driving data-driven decision-making. You will have the opportunity to work with multiple business/engineering groups, use your knowledge and experience to elevate the quality of tracking & instrumentation across the company, help data engineers build scalable platforms that produce business metrics and enable monitoring on those metrics. You will wear several different hats, but one that you will wear consistently is that of a leader. Strong behavioral analytics knowledge, experience with SQL and a desire to drive positive change are key to success in this role.

The role will be responsible for supporting global stakeholder departments, working domain leads and data citizens across different GEO’s such as Americas, EMEA, and Asia Pacific. Because the position requires interaction with geographically-disbursed teams so the candidate must be a self-starter with strong leadership qualities, project/task management skills, analytical skills and comfortable working with distributed teams.

Essential Functions (Tasks and Responsibilities):

  • Partner closely with other Product Managers to understand new product offerings built, and work with analysts to recommend the right metrics to measure those features.

  • Provide strategic and tactical guidance on specific data elements that need to be tracked in order to create those metrics.

  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams, provide ongoing support to help instrument said tracking elements, and help them triage debug and clarify tracking.

  • Collaborate with data platform teams in building/enhancing necessary data platforms to provide metrics & business insights and in building alerts to monitor those metrics.

  • Develop a strong understanding of the PayPal tracking infrastructure; Identify and act upon opportunities for simplicity, consistency and re-usability of tracking code.

  • Partner with the Tracking Platform team and feed requirements to them on opportunities for Platform improvements based on observations on the front lines.

  • Train and provide expert consultation to product management, engineering, analytics and other teams on tracking standards, tools and processes.

  • Document best practices for data tracking, and maintain documentation for self-service use.

  • Set and build tracking platform and engineering tools to stand par ahead of industrial expectation.

  • Seamlessly blend across Product, Engineering and Analytics to provide a clear, unified voice on data and instrumentation.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or engineering discipline with a strong quantitative aptitude

  • At least 5 years of experience as software engineer with 2-3 years of experience working with big data technologies like Hadoop, Spark, Elastic search, Kafka, etc

  • Strong object oriented design and development skills

  • Hands on with Java/Scala programming

  • Experience building RESTful APIs

  • Experience on Big Data Technologies such as Apache Spark, Kafka, Hive, HBase

  • Familiarity with Driud and Elasticsearch

  • Experience with Unix/ Linux and shell scripting

  • SQL development experience
