As a member of the In Store Technical Operations team, the Lead Observability Engineer will work to bring best-in-class observability capabilities and cross-team coordination to our Paydiant mobile commerce services. The Lead Observability Engineer is a platform-focused, individual contributor role responsible for the tools and processes that give Development, Operations and Support insight into the health and stability of Paydiant’s services. In this role, you will help define the direction of monitoring systems across our hybrid data center / cloud-based infrastructure, our multi-tenant microservices application stack and a wide range of merchant integrated solutions.
Qualified candidates should be ready to work in a DevOps environment delivering infrastructure and product solutions alongside performance, software development, operations and solutions engineers operating as one team. The Lead Observability Engineer will evangelize the importance of monitoring, perform hands-on technical management of the observability platform tools and will facilitate work from supporting teams through the Engineering planning process to build a cohesive ecosystem that supports our internal customers. The right candidate is ready to take ownership over the existing monitoring tools and observability practices. You will work in alignment other In Store Engineering leads as you define and maintain the observability ecosystem for Paydiant and identify opportunities to leverage the PayPal platform monitoring capabilities more deeply to deliver the stability and visibility that our business requires.
Establish and lead the Observability Working Group.
Paydiant platform monitoring coverage.
Responsible for the product capabilities of the observability platform.
Track Paydiant platform service levels.
Technical alignment and integration of Paydiant and PayPal monitoring.
Bachelor’s/Masters/PhD in Computer Science or related field with 5+ yrs of experience in systems engineering, SRE or NOC management. Exceptional candidates with less experience considered.
Experience building infrastructure services consumable by development and platform teams.
Experience building and managing hosted and on-premise monitoring and logging solutions including Nagios, DataDog, Splunk, SumoLogic and open source tools such as log4j.
Experience automating AWS services using Terraform, Jenkins, Ansible, Packer, Docker.
Strong Linux (RHEL) systems knowledge.
Proficient with Git/GitHub.
Understanding of and comfortable with DevOps ways of working.
Solid understanding of Software Development Life Cycles and software design principles.
Flexible and open to changing needs and expectations.
Able to collaborate and work effectively in a team environment.
Able to effectively communicate technical issues and propose solutions.
