Position Summary
The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) in the College of Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for multiple tenure-system positions with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2024. Although preference will be given to hiring at the Assistant Professor level, exceptional candidates at all levels will be considered. Candidates must have an earned PhD in mechanical engineering, engineering mechanics, aerospace engineering, or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
Mechanical Engineering at MSU has strong interdisciplinary research and educational programs. The Department has approximately 40 tenure system faculty, 200 graduate students, and 1500 undergraduate students. The faculty has vibrant ongoing research in advanced manufacturing, aerospace, combustion, control, design, dynamics, energy and sustainability, fluid dynamics, machine learning, robotics, solid mechanics, and thermal transport. The Department is actively looking for several highly motivated individuals with research interests and demonstrated background in any area related to engineering mechanics, aerospace, or mechanical engineering.
A tenure-system faculty member is expected to establish an active, sustainable, and internationally visible research program; make significant scholarly contributions to their discipline; be an effective teacher and mentor of both undergraduate and graduate students; and engage in institutional and professional service as well as public outreach. The successful candidate will also be capable of teaching mechanical engineering courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Other qualifications include strong leadership and interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, an ability to work in a collaborative research environment, and a commitment to promoting and embracing diversity. The Department and College have a strong track record of mentoring junior faculty to successfully grow their academic careers.
