As a member of the Satellite Connectivity Group, you will work on the satellite network that enables connectivity to iPhone when off the grid without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. Every day, Apple customers use Emergency SOS via satellite to access emergency assistance when they are in need of help and have no other means to communicate. You will have the unique and rewarding opportunity to shape this and other critical services to the benefit and safety of millions of Apple device users. The team is seeking a senior data scientist who will serve as a technical leader guiding the expansion of the team’s data science capabilities, helping to set strategy and executing on a long term vision. This person will also build tools and systems to analyze operational data, track the Quality of Experience, and identify problems with the system to ensure an optimal user experience. This person will collaborate closely with multiple teams throughout Apple to influence how we build and operate our system. They will examine and synthesize data from multiple sources to produce actionable recommendations for improvement. The successful candidate is a technical leader with experience building a data science team and capability. This person must have a track record of diving deep into data to uncover trends, identify anomalies, and understand the potential causes. Most importantly, this candidate is a storyteller who excels at pulling multiple threads together into a cohesive and compelling narrative that motivates changes and provides context and insight. This person creates beautiful and informative graphics, animations, and other visual media to communicate their results. A curious, creative, and analytical mind that can see both the big picture and drill down into the details are critical for this role.

Key Qualifications

  • 8+ years experience with data science, mathematical modeling, probability, statistics, and optimization.

  • Track record of technical leadership, particularly focused on developing and growing data science capabilities.

  • Experience synthesizing complex data sources into clear and insightful presentations with an emphasis on the story.

  • Demonstrated experience building analytic tools and analyzing operational data and distilling results into actionable recommendations.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and independent thinker.

  • Creativity and willingness to explore new solutions and ideas.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with scripting languages such as python, R, or MATLAB.

  • Experience with databases and query languages such as SQL.

  • Experience with Machine Learning.

  • Data visualization tools such as tableau.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and solid teamwork and leadership skills.

Description

Core responsibilities: - Develop strategy and execute on a long term vision for an expanding data science capability. - Work closely with cross functional teams to develop system metrics to accurately capture the performance and user experience. - Collaborate with product and engineering teams to answer deep analytical questions about performance and experience, influencing design decisions. - Mine data from multiple sources, develop algorithms, and perform rigorous statistical analysis to extract trends and other insights from data. - Produce data visualizations, dashboards, and reports to clearly communicate the system performance and its evolution over time.

Education & Experience

MS or PhD in quantitative field such as statistics, applied mathematics, operations research, engineering, or related discipline.
